History
It is said by our elders that there were two indigenous girls in love with Tenderi’s son but his interest was only for Princess Jalata. On the other hand, the rejected one gathered two other girls and went to a witch asking for advice. The witch told them that upon the mountain there was a snake which had bewitched the young man until she was murdered and t he only way they were going to release him from this course was if they tied the snake up with their hair, thus they did it, the snake started crying big drops until the Lagoon was formed but she never died. That’s why is still believe that snake is alive and is looking for a way to get rid of the indigenous girls’ hair.
Even if this legend sounds a bit incredible, this Crater Lake is an amazing source of life for the people who live on the surrounding areas. It is also well known, that before being a lake it was the highest volcano in Nicaragua but after its last eruption it collapsed and became the Apoyo Crater Lake.
According to some archeological studies, The Dirianes Tribe (People that Live on the highs or mountains in Nahuatl Language) settled down on the east side of the Laguna de Apoyo where it provided them with food, water and shelter.
Now a day, it is a Natural Reserve which houses different species of wildlife and attracts many tourists from around the world.
